A few days before Christmas, I spotted this E55 AMG in Arlington. These were rare to begin with, and I almost never see them now. Unfortunately, this one was beat to hell. Rust was spreading around the wheel wells, the bumpers were badly chewed up, and it looks like the right-rear window had been held up with packaging tape at one point. I was simultaneously thrilled and disappointed to see it.

I recognized the Phaeton next to it! Certainly a rare beast, the rarest being the e55 4matic, at I think 15 total produced. Man that thing looks beat though

See if they will sell cheap?

The badge placement and the fact that the tailpipes aren't recessed into the bumper says to me that it's a fake.

There was a W210 E55 estate wagon for sale in my area maybe 4 years ago. My wife found it while looking for station wagons on AutoTrader or Cars.com and didn't realize what the AMG meant. I showed her the top gear episode with E55 Estate vs. M5 Touring. We did not end up buying anything at that time. Recently we actually did buy a W211 wagon, but with a more tame and sedate V6 engine. She still thinks she has the car from that Top Gear though.
I still prefer the look of the W210 with its soft squareness. It's very understated, despite the radical (at the time) throwback headlights.

I owned a 2001. One of the best cars I've owned. You photographed a '99 which is an unusual year — the only year they did those weird oval lights on the trunk lid. Cool car and tremendously reliable. Not sure why everyone swaps out the wheels though — I think the OEMs are so distinctive and cool. My old one:

Badge placement looks right to me! The tailpipes weren't recessed in 99, which this car is. You'd have to check the interior (or under the hood) to know if it's real, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

They never sold the W210 E55 wagon in the States. I'd buy one in two seconds if they did. Glad you got a 211 wagon though. Way cooler than the ML!!! (or any other similarly priced SUV)

I just see so many "AMG" MBs with the tacked on exhaust tips and the wrong wheels that I assume every one is a fake. The badges just look a little off to me. The fact that one is so beat to hell made me think it couldn't be real. But you might be right.
